Christmas Bells

These cute Christmas Bell cookies take a little extra work to make, but they are worth it. You could probably save time using some store bought shapes cookie dough, but you’ll have more fun with these…and they taste better! Oh, and everyone will be amazed at your cookie talent!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla, mixing thoroughly.
  2. In a small bowl, blend flour, baking soda, and salt together.
  3. Slowly mix flour mixture into sugar mixture.
  4. Remove 2/3 of the cookie dough. Color this dough either green or red.
  5. Mold this colored dough into a roll, approximately 10″x1 1/2″.
  6. Shape the roll into a bell shape by squeezing the top together and flattening the bottom.
  7. Wrap tightly with saran wrap and chill in fridge for at least one hour.
  8. Separate out 1/4 cup of non-colored roll. Roll this dough into small, round balls for the  “clapper” of the bell.
  9. Roll the remaining white dough out on a piece of wax paper in a rectangle large enough to cover the roll made earlier (about 10″x4″).
  10. Wrap around roll and chill again for at least an hour.
  11. Heat oven to 375.
  12. Cut roll into 1/8″ thick slices.
  13. Place bells 1/2″ apart of ungreased cookie sheet.
  14. Press one of the small balls made earlier at the bottom of each bell.
  15. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

Makes 5 dozen cookies.
