Koulourakia are traditional Easter cookies from Greece. These yummy buttery cookies have a slight lemon flavor and are often sprinkled with sesame seeds. The result is a delicious cookie that is sure to delight!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. orange zest
  • 1 tbsp. baking powder
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 375.
  2. In a small bowl, blend together flour and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix butter and sugar.
  4. Beat eggs until light and add to butter mixture, blending well.
  5. Slowly add flour mixture to butter mixture. Mix thoroughly until smooth.
  6. Using a small chunk of dough, shape cookies into a rope about 4-6″ long.
  7. Shape dough rope into desired shape, usually spiral or crescent shaped.
  8. Place cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet, approximately 2″ apart.
  9. Brush tops of cookies lightly with well beaten egg.
  10. Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over cookies.
  11. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Note: You can replace the sesame seeds with confectioner’s sugar if desired. The effect is a slightly sweeter cookie.
