Koulourakia are traditional Easter cookies from Greece. These yummy buttery cookies have a slight lemon flavor and are often sprinkled with sesame seeds. The result is a delicious cookie that is sure to delight!
Ingredients
- 1 cup softened unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp. orange zest
- 1 tbsp. baking powder
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
- Heat oven to 375.
- In a small bowl, blend together flour and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, thoroughly mix butter and sugar.
- Beat eggs until light and add to butter mixture, blending well.
- Slowly add flour mixture to butter mixture. Mix thoroughly until smooth.
- Using a small chunk of dough, shape cookies into a rope about 4-6″ long.
- Shape dough rope into desired shape, usually spiral or crescent shaped.
- Place cookies onto ungreased cookie sheet, approximately 2″ apart.
- Brush tops of cookies lightly with well beaten egg.
- Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over cookies.
- Bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Note: You can replace the sesame seeds with confectioner’s sugar if desired. The effect is a slightly sweeter cookie.
